Spring Hill Cemetery

2009 Plan - 1

by Susan Zeni

The goals of the “Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery” are to work with Regional Parks in:

  1. Cleaning Up the Cemetery
  2. Maintaining the Cemetery
  3. Finding and Restoring Monuments, and resetting them as necessary
  4. Mapping the cemetery
  5. Developing burial policy for future burials (Lynn Green and Candy Donnelly)
  6. Identify hazardous conditions and refer them to Regional Parks for action (bees, poison oak, dead and dangerous trees, etc)

We look to Regional Parks to:

  1. Alleviate dangerous situations (bee / poison oak removal, resolution of dangerous tree issues)
  2. Resolve / negotiate neighbor and legal issues
  3. Support our workdays with tools, supplies (first aid, refreshment), a means of disposing of debris (dump truck)
  4. Parks or volunteer services personnel to support use of power equipment (chain saws/ weed whackers)
  5. Occasional drop off / pick up of monuments for repair at North Bay Monument
  6. Installation and maintenance of cemetery boundary markers

To reach our goals, the “Friends” organize 11 - 12 days each year for the volunteers to come to the cemetery and work. We have between 6 and 18 volunteers at each work session. Workdays are scheduled every 2 – 5 weeks so that we are able to continually monitor the condition and needs of the cemetery.

Tentative dates for 2009: Feb 20, Mar 20, Apr 17, May 1, May 29, June 19, July 17, Aug 21, Sep 18, Oct 16 and Nov 20. These dates may be modified to accommodate volunteers’ and Regional Parks schedules, and/or the needs of outside businesses that volunteer services (North Bay Monument in resetting stones, Norcal Geophysical Consultants in providing GPR services, etc). We generally take December and January off, and will plan to resume 2010 cemetery activities in February 2010.

Specific 2009 goals:

  1. Complete the clean up of the cemetery
  2. Continue ongoing maintenance of the cemetery – trash and debris removal
  3. Finish detailed mapping of the cemetery
  4. Reset headstone bases and stones, where possible
  5. Finalize burial policy (Candy / Lynn)
  6. Develop path plan
  7. Develop post- clean up plan (future landscaping, possible memorial to those burials at Spring Hill without markers, planning for information kiosk, etc)
  8. Continue outreach to Spring Hill Descendants and community as well as research into Spring Hill burials
